The creative and artistic impulse exists within
each of us. It is part of our spirit. Even if you
haven't picked up a paintbrush since grade school,
your desire to express yourself creatively is expressed
daily, throughout your home and garden, even in the
choices you make when you get dressed.
At Artista we practice communicating visually while
expanding our definition of art, which in turn helps
us explore our own creativity. Our instructors nurture
a safe haven for this process, so our classes are
encouraging, free from judgment, and punctuated with
Chardonnay breaks. Tapping into our inner resources,
we can begin to explore and discover.
Today it's time to apply new skills to a variety
of surfaces. In this workshop you'll lay paint
on gesso'd* watercolor paper and canvas from concept
to completion. Multiple demonstrations provide
opportunities to experiment on mediums of different
sizes, shapes and widths. Artista provides all
your material, tools, and the essentials - fruits,
chocolates, and Chardonnay.
Walking to lunch in the village is a great source
of inspiration and color themes. By now you'll be
viewing the world through the eyes of an artist,
eager to paint again.
Don't be surprised if you wake up with visions of
your next painting on your mind. So far, you've
explored color, texture, and shape. The next adventure
takes us beyond abstract and into the world of
realism. Your guides will demonstrate the process
of producing recognizable landscape paintings.
We'll help you create representations of the beauty
of surrounding Carmel-by-the-Sea as you see it.
We recommend daily walks to the beach. The drama
of the sea, the majesty of the redwoods, the detail
of the village will open your heart and guide your
paintbrush. We'll have all the tools ready when you
need them.
By now, you have a clearer view of yourself as an
artist, so we set aside this day to further develop
the style and techniques to which you're naturally
drawn. Work on exactly what you like - abstract
or landscape on paper or canvas. We'll be there
for support, but the time is yours to create.

"The process of discovery becomes the journey,
and the destination becomes the reward... expecting
nothing but the unexpected. Lauryn Taylor is expert
in teaching a style she describes as intuitive, abstract
painting. Creating through the act of mixing, brushing,
and texturing, liberating for anyone who otherwise
fears the process of making art. A former designer
for a leading greeting card publisher, Lauryn moved
to Carmel after her company sent her to the area
to find inspiration. She now teaches a series of
classes throughout Northern California designed for
both novice and expert painters. Her contemporary
acrylic and mixed media paintings employ vivid colors
combined with rich textures resulting in intriguing
abstract paintings. She is also curator/owner of
the Lauryn Taylor Fine Art gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea,
where her art work, and works by her students and
accomplished artists can be viewed and enjoyed.
